Description

Learn the purpose of Delay

Delay or 'echo' is a workhorse in any studio. Delay allows us to take a sound and repeat it. We have control over the speed of the repeat as well as the number of times it repeats. Delay can be used to add very nice textures and effects to any performance.

The software synth Helm and the audio recording software Audacity both have built in Delay modules. You can see tutorial on both of these here:

Rack's Delay module is very easy to use and can provide you with an interesting tool box for creating unique sounds.

How to use the Mix function in Delay.

A good place to start with Delay is Mix. Think of the sound coming out of the Delay unit as a combination of the original sound you put into it and the effected sound which is created by the Delay process. The Mix control balances the amount of original sound (dry) and effected sound (wet) we hear. All the way to the left gives you only the dry sound and all the way to the right gives you onlythe wet sound. Between these two extreme will be a combination of both.

What is the Time function and how is it used.

If we think of Delay as producing echos then Time allows us to adjust the time between repeated sounds. Further to the left can take the sounds down to the milliseconds and to the right provides a delay seconds in duration.

Rotating the control to the right can create such fast repeated sounds that it can result in some very interesting textures.

What is the Feedback function and how is it used.

If Time controls the lenght of time between repeated sounds Feedback controls the time it takes for the repeated sounds to fade away to silence. Turning the control all the way to the left will have the sound fade away instantly and all the way to the right will have the sound repeating on and on with now decrease in volume level
