Camille felt that familiar ache again, the kind that felt like it left her with a gaping hole in her chest.
Living by herself was proving to be difficult; her neighbors having proved to be not much of help. Maybe tomorrow she'd feel better.
Remembering her interaction with Nurse Harrington, Camille stood up with a smile on her face, she'd find a way to soften her up.
The next day, Nurse Harrington almost arrived late for her shift, feeling irritation at her husband for having been the main cause of her delay.
She just about settled down in her seat at the nurses' station, before she noticed the small basket at her side of the desk. Leaning closer, she caught a whiff of freshly baked muffins under the blue-checkered cloth.
Curious as to who might've left it, she also couldn't stop her stomach from rumbling in hunger, as she had skipped breakfast this morning.
Just as Nurse Harrington thought it wouldn't hurt to take a piece, she was startled by a voice from her side, "I baked them myself, I hope you don't mind the bits of apple in them."
Nurse Harrington looked up at Camille standing beside her, before she could vent her morning's irritation on the young lady, Camille leaned down and softly kissed her cheek.
Anyone passing by wouldn't have noticed how Nurse Harrington's eyes slightly dimmed and took on a faraway look as her jaw slackened. All this, Camille watched with an unreadable expression on her face.
Her phantom kisses were like that, they took a part of you with her.
