Raising Tadpoles (Day 7) - We have 82!

Day 7

Transferred the tadpoles to the new 5 gallon yesterday, quite the upgrade I'd say! They'll be transferred to the 20 gallon once they're bigger. Had to use a small measuring cup to get them out, ended up having to pull all but 2 out individually - I counted 82! Out of the 83 that emerged from the eggs, 1 was already dead and 1 is malformed (with its tail at a right angle, it's unlikely to survive). Assuming the second is going to pass, that makes for a 98% post-egg survival rate so far. Hopefully all of them will make it to the 20 gallon.

The small size of the old tank's water changes presented an issue. Doing a 30% water change on my 30 gallon tank allows me to use about 16 g Epsom salt and 8 g baking soda. The 2/3 of a gallon water change on the 3 gallon means I had to work with tenths of a gram when my scale only measures to the nearest whole gram. Thankfully, by switching from the 3 gallon to the 5 gallon, I've now doubled the amount of water I have in the tank from 2 gallons to 4 gallons.

Also, if you're wondering why the water in the 3 gallon is murky, I decided to feed them shortly before the move. You don't have to worry about getting the right amount if the water is just going to be dumped in an hour anyway. In all other circumstances, always err on the side of moderation, tadpoles are especially sensitive to overfeeding since the particles can block oxygen from properly entering their gills. If your tank has been overfed to such a level, you should consider a water change.
