Day 6
See all those bubbles? That's the result of the tadpoles breathing at the surface
Current set up is 2 gallons of water (7,570 mL) in a 3 gallon (11,360 mL) tank, meaning I change out about 2/3 of a gallon (2520 mL) daily. In order to get the numbers close, I put an empty gallon with a funnel on a kitchen scale. I then scoop up water with a cup until I get close enough. This may sound a bit excessively precise to you but keep in mind that my water has 0 general hardness (GH) and 0 carbonate hardness (KH). Since African Clawed Frogs (ACF) require hard water to thrive, this is a major issue and needs to be addressed.
There are products you can buy in order to increase both GH and KH but I just use Epsom salt for GH and baking soda for KH . Baking soda also controls the PH, ACFs prefer water to be a bit basic, I keep my tank at 7.6 but so long as your PH is stable and above 7, you should be alright (Note that, in tanks with filters, biological filtration slows if the PH gets below 7 and stops if it gets below 6), the, the biological com). The proportions are 1 tsp (13 g) baking soda per 10 gallons and 1 tbsp (26 g) Epsom salt per 10 gallons.
