Halloween Constest | Scariest Music Videos [ENG/ESP]

This time I bring you a selection of the spookiest, most disturbing and sinister music videos in this Halloween special.

Esta vez les traigo una selección de los vídeos musicales más tenebrosos, perturbadores y siniestros en este especial de Halloween.

Halloween is the time of the year in which, terror is celebrated. And taking advantage of the fact that the community still has an active contest in honor of the date, I bring you another post, but this time to talk about those music tracks that, in their video format, were inspired by Halloween or simply have something scary in their content.

For this list I am considering some songs with disturbing videos, some of them you may already know, because they are iconic. Although some videos are not "spooky", they did scare the crap out of me when I tuned in on MTV. At some point, I even avoided some of these songs, but here is my list.

Halloween es la época del año en la cual, el terror es celebrado. Y aprovechando que la comunidad todavía tiene un concurso activo en honor a la fecha, les traigo otra entrada, pero esta vez para hablar de aquellos temas musicales que, en su formato de video, se inspiraron en Halloween o simplemente tienen algo de aterrador en su contenido.

Para esta lista estoy considerando algunas canciones con videos perturbadores, algunos quizás ya los conozcas, porque son icónicos. Aunque algunos videos no son “tenebrosos”, si me daban mucho miedo cuando los sintonizaba en MTV. En algún tiempo, incluso llegué a evitar algunas de estas canciones, pero aquí les presento mi listado.

Going under is an alternative rock classic. Although it didn't get much of a reception, I remember being terrified to see this Evanescence video on TV. Even whenever VH1 and MTV aired it, I avoided watching it unaccompanied, because I felt that at some point a demon was going to come out of the screen. Loaded with a gloomy atmosphere from minute one, we see Amy, lead singer of the band surrounded by vampires with the most disturbing faces you can imagine.

Then, a sequence that includes demons and monsters in the audience and more vampires at a press conference makes it quite clear that, at the time, the American band wanted to disassociate themselves from the rumor that associated them with gospel. Of course, nowadays, both the song and the video seem to me to be a work of art.

Going under es un clásico del rock alternativo. Aunque no tuvo mayor recepción, recuerdo que me daba mucho terror ver este video de Evanescence en la televisión. Incluso siempre que VH1 y MTV lo transmitían, evitaba verlo sin compañía, porque sentía que en algún momento iba a salir un demonio de la pantalla. Cargado de un ambiente lúgubre desde el minuto uno, vemos a Amy, vocalista de la banda rodeada de vampiros con los rostros más perturbadores que puedas imaginar.

Luego, una secuencia que incluye a demonios y monstruos entre el público y más vampiros en una conferencia de prensa, nos deja bastante claro que, en aquella época, la banda estadounidense quería desligarse de aquel rumor que los asociaba con el evangelio. Por supuesto, hoy en día tanto la canción como el video, me parecen una obra de arte.

The first thing I'm going to say about Bring Me to Life is that it's one of my favorite songs and an excellent cover letter for Evanescence's debut album Fallen. But, this music video terrified me, more than anything, because of the whole story it told, which seemed to be an ode to sleep paralysis. Plunged into a nightmare in which Amy wakes up and seemingly starts walking around her building, this video is iconic.

Followed by a sequence of images appearing behind each window, we get her companions singing on the top floor. Then Paul drops Amy to the floor, waking her up again, implying that it had all been a nightmare within a nightmare. A powerful song, with a scary video, that I had to include in my list.

Lo primero que voy a decir de Bring Me to Life, es que una de mis canciones favoritas y una excelente carta de presentación para el disco Fallen, el debut de Evanescence. Pero, este video musical me aterrorizaba, más que nada, por toda la historia que contaba, que parecía ser una oda a la parálisis del sueño. Sumergida en una pesadilla en la cual Amy despierta y parece ser que comienza a caminar por su edificio, este video es icónico.

Seguido de una secuencia de imágenes que aparecen detrás de cada ventana, nos conseguimos a sus compañeros cantando en el último piso. Luego Paul deja caer a Amy hasta el piso, despertando está de nuevo, dando a entender que todo había sido una pesadilla dentro de una pesadilla. Una canción poderosa, con un video tenebroso, que debía incluir en mi lista.

This Michael Jackson song, which practically inaugurated MTV in the eighties, is still a classic of this time of the year. With a video shot in movie format, it is to this day one of his biggest hits and one of the most expensive music videos of all time. This particular music video has always been one of my favorites, despite the terrifying tone it manages.

Loaded with a terrifying atmosphere, Michael immerses himself in the role of a boy who turns into a werewolf during a full moon. This causes his terrified wife to flee his company, while an army of undead come out of their graves to chase her in a dance sequence, particularly the most famous choreography on Halloween. A horror classic as far as music videos go.

Esta canción de Michael Jackson, que prácticamente inauguró a MTV en la década de los ochenta, es hasta ahora un clásico de estas fechas. Con un video grabado en formato de película, es hasta ahora uno de sus mayores éxitos y uno de los videos musicales más costosos de todos los tiempos. Este video musical en particular siempre ha sido uno de mis favoritos, a pesar del tono aterrador que maneja.

Cargado de una atmosfera aterradora, Michael se sumerge en el papel de un chico que en luna llena se convierte en hombre lobo. Esto hace que su esposa aterrorizada huya de su compañía, mientras un ejército de muertos vivientes sale de sus tumbas para perseguirla en una secuencia de baile, particularmente la coreografía más famosa en Halloween. Un clásico del terror en cuanto a videos musicales se refiere.

It was impossible not to include a Spanish song in this list. Sometimes reality overcomes fiction and this song, although it talks about social inequality in Latin America, through immigration and the sense of identity that our native peoples have, I had the idea of including it because its music video is full of references to the most terrifying legends and myths of Latin America.

However, what makes this song and its video iconic, in my opinion, is the social sense it has when talking about immigration at a time when the main migratory waves came from Central America, Mexico and Cuba. A true ode to the oral tradition of Latin American souls.

Era imposible no incluir a una canción en español en esta lista. A veces la realidad supera la ficción y esta canción, aunque habla de la desigualdad social en América latina, a través de la inmigración y el sentido de identidad que tienen nuestros pueblos originarios, tuve la idea de incluirla porque su video musical está repleto de referencias a las leyendas y mitos más aterradores de Latinoamérica.

Sin embargo, lo que hace a esta canción y a su video icónicos, a mi parecer, es el sentido social que tiene al hablar de la inmigración en una época donde las principales olas migratorias provenían de Centroamérica, México y Cuba. Una verdadera oda a la tradición oral de las ánimas latinoamericanas.

Although it is probably Shakira's biggest musical hit, there are countless urban legends involving the video of this song. It all has to do with a strange mummy that clashes with the rest of the video. According to the story, it is a girl who before the filming of the video suffered an accident that caused a large part of her body to be burned.

Even when her body was covered by bandages, showing a mummy-like appearance that would later create endless theories and urban legends, the dead girl? Apparently, she wanted to participate in the video from second 00:58 to minute 1:24 of the song's video because of the great fanaticism she professed for the Colombian singer. Of course, no one has ever explained the veracity of this story and, therefore, it is terrifying.

Aunque es probablemente el mayor éxito musical de Shakira, existen innumerables leyendas urbanas que involucran al video de esta canción. Todo tiene que ver con una extraña momia que desentona con el resto del video, según cuentan, es una niña que antes de la filmación del video sufrió un accidente que provocó que se quemara gran parte de su cuerpo.

Incluso cuando su cuerpo estaba cubierto por vendas, mostrando una apariencia de momia que a la postre crearía un sinfín de teorías y leyendas urbanas, la niña ¿muerta? Aparentemente, quiso participar en el video del segundo 00:58 al minuto 1:24 del video de la canción por el gran fanatismo que esta profesaba por la cantante colombiana. Por supuesto, nadie nunca nos ha explicado la veracidad de esta historia y, por lo tanto, es aterradora.

Although I'm not a big fan of Marilyn Manson's career, I must admit that several of his videos would enter without hesitation in this list. You should even know that this singer seems to be trapped in a horror movie or rather a cringe movie, I don't know. The truth is that I wanted to choose the music video of the single Sweet Dreams.

Among other things, I chose this song because it is full of disturbing images and parts of the singer's body. The latter already makes any video featuring Marilyn into something terrifying, disturbing and bizarre.

Aunque no soy un gran fanático de la carrera de Marilyn Manson, sí que debo de admitir que varios de sus videos entrarían sin dudarlo en esta lista. Incluso deberías saber que este cantante, pareciera atrapado en una película de terror o más bien de cringe, no lo sé. Lo cierto es que quise elegir el video musical del sencillo Sweet Dreams.

Entre otras cosas, elegí esta canción porque su video está repleto de imágenes perturbadoras y partes del cuerpo del cantante. Esto último ya hace cualquier vídeo donde salga Marilyn en algo de terror, perturbador y bizarro.
