ENG is the native token of Steem Engine. At the moment ENG is required to create tokens on. A future use case will be creation and execution of smart contracts.
@harpagon announced recently that Steem Engine will be developed towards a DPoS system, analog to Steem, where witnensses can be voted by ENG holders and will be rewarded with ENG token.
