After the off-road vehicle Rambo Lambo aka Lamborghini LM002, RM Sotheby's is going to auction next month during its Amelia Island Sale this 1991 Lamborghini Diablo originally owned by racing legend Mario Andretti.

History of the Lamborghini Diablo
In order to replace the Countach, in 1985, Lamborghini asked to Marcello Gandini, Italian car designer, to design a coachwork for its prototype Project 132 or P132. But in 1987, Chrysler bought the company and injected money in the car's development. The design wasn't liked in Detroit and was softened, smoothing out the sharp edges and corners of Gandini's original design.
As usual, the Lamborghini Diablo was named after a famous fighting bull, raised by the Duke of Veragua in the 19th century, famous for fighting an epic battle in Madrid on 11 July 1869 (source PDF lambocars.com).
The car was produced between 1990 and 2001.
This Lamborghini Diablo was bought by Mario Andretti in 1991. He's an Italian-born American former racing driver, one of the most recognizable names in the history of motorsport by winning (the only driver to do it) :
- Indianapolis 500 in 1969,
- Daytona 500 in 1967,
- Formula 1 World Championship in 1978.
With Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti is one of only two drivers to have won races in in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship and NASCAR.
Specification
The Lamborghini Diablo with its 5.7-liter V-12 engine can produce 485 hp. It can reach 0-100 kmh in about 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 325 kmh. This example comes with the optional rear wing.
