Rounding the Mouthpiece on the Ramos Quena

If you’re a regular here at QuenaSabor, you May have already seen me talk about rounding the mouthpiece on other quenas:

Today is nothing special (except that I made some sweet gifs while I was working :) - the process is the same for all of them pretty much, and little by little I’m leaving none behind.

First I do the rough removal with a burr sander. Gotta be careful here, especially since this one’s got fresh sandpaper - this thing could rip the mouthpiece down to nothing real quick, and I assume changing the bore length could ruin the quena’s intonation.

Once the rounded edge is roughed in, I clean it up with some high grit sandpaper by hand.

You can see the the difference is subtle to the eyes, but it feels like a completely different flute when you play it.

Today I used furniture polishing oil to finish the job. This product has a really nice orange smell that pairs well with the natural scent of the Jacaranda wood.

And voila! It’s all done and ready to keep on jammin’!
