This flute has already seen a round of modifications, you may remember when we repaired it with superglue and brass shavings, adding the laser etching to complete the process…here is a link in case you missed it :)
Today, I filmed Episode 044 of Car-Fluting.
It’s scheduled to release on 08 September 2022 if you’re interested, and it was a good episode, jamming along with track 5 from Dimension’s self-titled album, Back Again.
This episode was filmed using the Lupaca Bone Quena. I’ve mentioned it before, but today the idea set in and I knew it was time to round the mouthpiece. I swear, I must be missing something. I can’t figure out why so few makers are doing this! Or, worse yet, they round the opposite end, but not the mouthpiece! So they have the equipment and skills needed, which makes me wonder what I’m missing…but so far, none of the flutes I’ve rounded have caused me any issues, so I suppose I’ll keep going.
Here’s the flute as it started out the day; note the mouthpiece has a hard cornered edge.
Pretty straight forward, this whole process took less time than it takes my phone to load the Ecency front end. Seriously, within 45 seconds, I was done.
I used an electric deburring sander. Certainly would have taken longer with my usual file and sandpaper, but under no circumstances is this a difficult or long job.
And here it is, mouthpiece fully rounded. You can see that the length of the flute’s interior bore has not changed at all; only the outside of the body was re-shaped. Hopefully this will feel better to play without sacrificing sound quality, as has been the case with the others for which I’ve done this.
