Welcome to my #SublimeSunday post on this little known skill of roof thatching. Thanks to @c0ff33a for thnking up such a novel tag where you can post your wacky and wonderful weirdness and also #BeautifulSunday initiated by @Ace108
I spotted these two old boys on the roof of a beautiful old 17th century cottage as they were replacing the thatched roof and it peaked my curiosity. Thatch has been used for 1,000's of years to make roofs and is still widely used around the world.
There are approximately just 900 roof thatchers active in the UK. That is a proper niche occupation?
Roof thatchers in the UK

The use of thatched roofs was banned in London in the year 1212 because of the fire hazard they presented. It didn't change the fact that London burnt to the ground in 1666 due to the whole place being built from wood!? 🤣

A thatched roof can last for 25 - 60 years and are quite expensive to build but they do look stunning.

Roof thatching is a highly skilled job

The new golden thatch looks fab in this light
I hope you enjoyed this post of a very niche job. These two old boys must have been in their mid 60's in age so who knows how long these skills will be around in the next 50 years? I can't see a robot replacing these guys any time soon?
Have a sublime Sunday folks.
