Cuando yo estaba en la universidad y estaba a punto de obtener mi primer título, que era de técnico superior, realmente estaba muy contento y, además, estaba bastante orgulloso, ya que me habían felicitado los profesores por el trabajo de grado y por los comentarios que había hecho la empresa donde yo estaba haciendo la pasantía.

Y recuerdo que le había comentado a muchos compañeros cómo me sentía con las felicitaciones que me habían dado y con dos cartas de recomendación que me ofrecieron dos profesores al ver mi desempeño académico y laboral.

Eso significaba que era muy probable que la empresa me dejara fijo, como realmente pasó un tiempo después, y también significaba que, con el apoyo de los profesores, podría continuar con la licenciatura y hasta optar por la bendita media beca que le estaban ofreciendo a los mejores estudiantes.

Y recuerdo que justo dos semanas antes de hacer la entrega y defender el trabajo de grado, le di el trabajo a un profesor en una memoria USB, para que él lo bajara en la PC del salón de profesores, y recuerdo que lo hizo sin problemas.

Ese día, salí de clases, me reuní con unos compañeros, nos tomamos un café y después me fui a mi casa, y después de llegar y descansar un rato, me fui a estudiar y encendí mi PC personal, y después de un rato metí la USB, y después de unos 40 minutos, la máquina se reinició y después no daba para prender y se quedaba con la pantalla en negro.

Recuerdo que esa noche no pude dormir, estaba muy preocupado, ya que todo lo tenía en la PC, y lo que hice al levantarme fue llamar al jefe del departamento donde yo estaba haciendo la pasantía. Le comenté lo que me había pasado y me dijo que me llevara la PC a la empresa, para que los compañeros de informática la revisaran.

Después de dejar la máquina en informática, me fui a trabajar, ya que no iba a hacer nada estorbando a los compañeros que me estaban revisando la máquina y, como a las dos horas, llamaron a la oficina y me pidieron que bajara a informática.

Cuando llegué, me dijeron: "Todo el sistema está roto, y tienes un problema grave con el disco duro, debido a un troyano". Cuando pregunté qué era un troyano, me dijeron que era un virus hecho para el sistema operativo Windows.

Finalmente, me dijeron que no podían hacer nada por mí, que la recomendación era poner un sistema nuevo, y me recomendaron comprar un disco duro nuevo, por los problemas que el virus le había causado a los sectores del disco.

Yo estaba contra el piso, ya que los libros que había digitalizado, el trabajo de grado, mis fotos y otra cantidad de informaciones y escritos personales estaban en la PC.

Recuerdo que cuando fui a comprar el disco duro, el muchacho que me atendió, me vio muy preocupado y me preguntó qué me pasaba y le eché el cuento. Él me dijo que intentaría ayudarme y me dijo que le diera la máquina y la memoria USB.

Cuando revisó la máquina, me dijo que había problema en los sectores del disco duro, y que lo mejor era poner uno nuevo. Después iba a revisar la memoria, y cuando vi que la iba a meter en su PC, le dije que debía tener cuidado con el virus, y él me dijo que su máquina tenía Linux y por eso no le entraban virus.

Me invitó a pasar y me senté al lado de él. Cuando colocó la memoria USB, no abría y daba error. Yo en ese momento me resigné y me di por perdido. El muchacho me vio y me dijo: "Esto es una tontería". Después apretó unas teclas del teclado y se abrió una cajita negra.

Era la primera vez que veía una terminal abierta; estamos hablando del año 2002. Él hizo su magia con los comandos, y me dijo como a los 5 minutos: "Ya podemos ver lo que hay en la memoria", y en la caja negra estaba el nombre de mi trabajo de grado. Después me dijo el muchacho: "Vamos a abrirlo de modo gráfico para que lo revise".

Y efectivamente, ahí estaba mi trabajo de grado y otras informaciones y unas correcciones. Ese día le pregunté al muchacho todo lo que se me ocurrió sobre Linux, y después le pregunté qué sistema operativo usaba, y me dijo que el OpenSUSE y que lo podía conseguir en la venta de programas y discos de la universidad.

Y así fue, lo busqué y me dieron un paquete con unos 12 CD, y yo que en ese momento era un usuario muy limitado de Windows, no sabía qué hacer con eso. Y así, inicié mi vida en Linux en el año 2002, aprendiendo cómo usar el OpenSUSE, y desde esa época hasta hoy en día, no sé lo que es un sistema roto o una pérdida de información por fallo del sistema.

Ya son 23 años siendo, orgullosamente, linuxero.

When I was at university and I was about to get my first degree, which was as a senior technician, I was really very happy and, besides, I was quite proud, since the professors had congratulated me for the undergraduate work and for the comments made by the company where I was doing the internship.

That meant that it was very likely that the company would leave me fixed, as it really happened some time later, and it also meant that, with the support of the professors, I could continue with the bachelor's degree and even opt for the blessed half scholarship that they were offering to the best students.

And I remember that just two weeks before making the delivery and defending the degree work, I gave the work to a teacher on a USB stick, so that he could download it on the PC of the teachers' lounge, and I remember that he did it without problems.

That day, I left classes, I met with some classmates, we had a coffee and then I went home, and after arriving and resting for a while, I went to study and turned on my personal PC, and after a while I put the USB, and after about 40 minutes, the machine restarted and then it wouldn't turn on and the screen stayed black.

I remember that I couldn't sleep that night, I was very worried, since I had everything on the PC, and what I did when I got up was to call the head of the department where I was doing the internship. I told him what had happened to me and he told me to take the PC to the company, so that the IT colleagues could check it.

After leaving the machine in computer science, I went to work, since I wasn't going to do anything hindering the colleagues who were checking my machine and, about two hours later, they called the office and asked me to go down to computer science.

When I arrived, they told me: "The whole system is broken, and you have a serious problem with the hard drive, due to a Trojan." When I asked what a Trojan was, I was told that it was a virus made for the Windows operating system.

Finally, they told me that they couldn't do anything for me, that the recommendation was to put in a new system, and they recommended buying a new hard drive, because of the problems that the virus had caused to the disk sectors.

I was up against the floor, because the books I had digitized, the degree work, my photos and other amount of personal information and writings were on the PC.

I remember that when I went to buy the hard drive, the guy who took care of me, saw me very worried and asked me what was wrong and I told him the story. He told me he would try to help me and told me to give him the machine and the USB stick.

When he checked the machine, he told me that there was a problem in the sectors of the hard drive, and that it was best to put a new one. Then I was going to check the memory, and when I saw that he was going to put it in his PC, I told him that he should be careful with the virus, and he told me that his machine had Linux and that's why viruses didn't get into it.

He invited me in and I sat next to him. When he put the USB stick in, it wouldn't open and gave an error. At that moment I resigned myself and gave up for lost. The boy saw me and said, "This is nonsense." Then he pressed a few keys on the keyboard and a little black box opened.

It was the first time I saw an open terminal; we are talking about the year 2002. He did his magic with the commands, and told me about 5 minutes later: "We can already see what is in the memory", and in the black box was the name of my degree work. Then the boy said to me, "Let's open it graphically so that I can check it out."

And indeed, there was my degree thesis and other information and some corrections. That day I asked the boy everything I could think of about Linux, and then I asked him what operating system he used, and he told me that the openSUSE and that I could get it in the sale of programs and disks of the university.

And so it was, I looked it up and they gave me a package with about 12 CDs, and I, who at that time was a very limited Windows user, didn't know what to do with it. And so, I started my life on Linux in 2002, learning how to use openSUSE, and from that time until today, I don't know what a broken system is or a loss of information due to system failure.
