I grew up with words stuck in my chest. Around my fourth birthday, I was unable to pronounce even a monosyllable. Back then, everyone viewed me with a kind of compassion. To them, I was a poor, voiceless girl. I remember the look of pity that came over people's faces when they saw me so silent. My neighbor, a coarse woman who believed in me, repeated many rude things every afternoon hoping I would imitate her, because according to her, bad things are learned faster. The woman would fire off the crudest phrases in bursts, and I would catch them. One day, I said my first vulgarity, which was celebrated by everyone as if I had just given a speech at the UN General Assembly.
