The Blue Envelope: The Weekend Freewrite -11/9/2019

Standing on the chair, she and Tom had scratched away at the bones. Trick. Thievery from the store didn't pay. Here were the bones to prove the suspected.

"Complex self-checkout," remarked Tom.

Carrin stroked her long brown hair with the brush in her right hand, a sign she was thinking. "It appears, and all of this over some groceries that he couldn't afford so he used the 'Banana Trick.'" Inspecting the wall surrounding the brittle bones with her tool, she found another hidden clue. "Looks like they forgot to take this ring when they left."

"Is that what they wanted?"

Carrin wasn't the best criminologist but her senses told her that they wanted this ring very badly. How did they miss nabbing it was another unanswered question. Maybe he fell into the acid before they frisked him she thought when prying the ring from the boney hand.

Stepping down from the stool, Carrin and Tom stood in the center of the room contemplating.

Rich - poor? Which to choose? Carrin wanted riches but knew that Tom would not go along willingly. He was a stand-up, goody officer like his father. Upholding the law until death takes him.

"We should get the to station," Tom said, "because it's late and there's paperwork." How am I going to get her to lose sight of that ring, Tom asked himself as he packed his tools.

"I know there are lots of you who don’t like government interference," Carrin said, "so let's keep this find a secret." The ring shined.

"I'm fine with that." Tom smiled.

They walked to the truck, threw their tools into the truck's bed, and got in the cab. Tom, chipper, was at the wheel.

"Do you mind if we make one stop?" Tom adjusted the mirrors, aligning them to his line of sight.

"I don't mind," said Carrin, "as long as you get us back before the day breaks."

Tom hit the gas harder than usual, a sign to Carrin that he was excited about something not shared. Carrin, distracted with the ring in the back and what to do about Tom, frowned. How could she get away? Murder? Bullet to the head as he drives?

Tom turned down a dirt road that looked like it lead into the center of the milky way. The Ford F250, lacking proper shocks, bounced them around.

The air filtering in through the vents brought with it an acrid, suffocating smell that weighed heavy on their lungs. Coughing, both of them hurried and covered their mouths with their shirts.

"Where," Carrin asked after taking a choked gasp of air, "are you taking us?"

"The smell wasn't here last time," he replied, tears forming in his eyes.

Carrin, perhaps willingly, didn't know Tom Had been here before.

The blue envelope on the floor seized her attention. Tom, noticing her sudden intent, slammed on the breaks as she reached down to pick it up. Her head slammed against the dashboard. Carrin sat upright and screamed, "What the fuck, you asshole!"

Tom, taking advantage of her confusion and haziness, opened her door and pushed her out forcefully.

Her tongue tasted the ground. It reminded her of the time her mother took her to the cockroach-infested motel that the local gangs had controlled.

Carrin felt her whole body jerk as Tom hit the gas again. Her foot was wrapped up in the seatbelt somehow and she couldn't shake free. The ground ripped away her shirt and beat her back, leaving deep and shallow cuts.

"Die, bitch!" Tom said. His adrenalin boost pumped him up more. "The precious ring is going to be all mine this time. Die, bitch."

Unreal. Carrin saw in her mind's eye that she had been here before many times, each time the same scenario repeats. A voice coming from somewhere outside of herself said, "Get up before he leaves you in the lake." The blue envelope flutter up and over her.

"Can't get past the training bot, hey Rookie," Joey said punching her arm.

"I'm determined and persistent. I won't stop."

THE END

So, this was an interesting challenge, as recommended by John Taylor Gatto, that I gave myself to do. If you take notice, each section of the 3 prompt stories has 21 sentences each that are 1 word in length, 2 words in length, 3 words in length, etc, all the way up to 21 in random order. This was a tough exercise but a fun one.

I was finding that 21 words in a sentence was too short for some of what went through my head so I do believe I'll give this exercise a going with 30 sentences."
