Hong Kong Snapshot (103) - Causeway Bay 003

Hi Guys! In the newest Hong Kong Snapshot series, I will introduce the story of Causeway Bay. Causeway Bay is at the HK Island. When HK is a world known city, Causeway Bay is a tourists known district. It is a centre of tourism, shopping, culture, entertainment and business, and is a must go place for every HK local and tourist. Causeway Bay has the second most expensive street in the world, and countless international brands. It is the first choice for many international companies to settle in Asia. To introducing Causeway Bay, I firstly have to introduce it’s history of development. Last time, we talked about the horse racecourse built in Happy Valley next to Causeway Bay. And now, we go back to Causeway Bay.

Today, the Causeway Bay district includes Causeway bay, Tin Hau and Tai Hang. And in fact, in the ancient time Causeway Bay should be “Tin Hau” and today’s Causeway Bay we are familiar with was called “East Point”. Why was it called? According to legend, the coast of Causeway Bay looked like a sharp point and it was at the east of Central and Sheung Wan (main area of HK at the time). So it was called East point.

After the British entered HK, the land of Wan Chai and Causeway Bay was auctioned. Most of the land in Causeway Bay was auctioned by Jardine Matheson. Jardine noticed that East Point could be a good haven and built warehouses, docks, piers and Offices at East Point, which were located at today’s Yee Wo Street and Jardine’s Bazaars. Since then, Causeway Bay became the property of Jardine for half a century. Today, we can find the streets’ name in Causeway Bay are related to Jardine Matheson, like Yee Wo Street (Chinese Name of Jardine), Jardine’s Bazaars, Jardine’s Crescent, and also Percival Street, Paterson Street and Matheson Street (All were important people of Jardine Matheson).

Later, Causeway Bay underwent several reclamation projects and gradually become the shape we can find in map today. Most traces of Jardine are lost. One example still left is the Jardine Noonday Gun. It was a private Noonday Gun of Jardine and originally set up at Cannon Street. Later it was moved to the coast after reclamation and now still hold the noon gun ceremony. For more about it, please read my post: Hong Kong Snapshot (58) – Pass through a secret tunnel and watch the gun salute – Jardine Noonday Gun

Hong Kong Snapshot (58) – Pass through a secret tunnel and watch the gun salute – Jardine Noonday Gun

On the other hand, the mint operated by the Government on Sugar Street today was bought by Jardine due to it’s poor operation. Jardine changed it to sugar factory. It is also the origin of the name Sugar Street. The Chinese started to gather at the area near the sugar factory and formed a bazaar. Today, the street is named as “Jardine’s bazaars”. Later, bad people of dubious character also gathered at the place, which led to the government’s intention to rectify and built the Tang Lung Chau Market. Unfortunately, the results were extremely poor. You may read my post about this story: Hong Kong Snapshot (26) (With Video) – Tang Lung Chau Market, a half-ruined market

Hong Kong Snapshot (26) (With Video) – Tang Lung Chau Market, a half-ruined market

Jardine Matheson led the development of Causeway Bay in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Then, another family joined. the family was called the “King of Opium”. It was one of the four major families in HK. It is also the founder of Television Broadcast, the most influential TV station for Chinese. We will talk about it in the next post. See you!
