Well, through our six-part series on the Human Body, you will find out how amazing your body is.

This six parts will consist of the following elements:

Part 1: Cardiovascular System
Part 2: Support System
Part 3: Respiratory System
Part 4: Digestive System
Part 5: Excretory System
Part 6: Nervous System

Each of these six systems has different functions and elements that we will focus on, but for today we will be focusing on the:

*Heart
*Blood
*Arteries
*Veins

Functions of the cardiovascular system

*Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
*Distributes nutrients
*Transports waste
*Distributes hormones
*Regulates body temperatures

The heart is a specialized muscle, whose function is to circulate the blood through the body. The cardiovascular system has a cardiac cycle which consists of two parts

  1. Systole: This is where the ventricles contract.
  2. Diastole: This is where all the heart chambers relax following the contraction of the atria. Here is a short video clip to show you how the cycle works.

Our blood transports nutrients, gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide), hormones and waste products. It also helps with our immune system.
Have you ever thought what your blood consists off.
Take a look at this picture, that shows you the blood components.


Arteries have smooth muscles in the walls and it takes blood away from the heart.
Veins have valves, no muscles and takes the blood toward the heart.
