En la remodelación de la plaza de España que se efectuó en 1969, se instaló “La fuente del nacimiento del agua” también llamada “La fuente de las conchas”.
Es una fuente muy bonita que se encuentra en el extremo de la plaza de España que está en contacto con la Gran Vía/ calle Princesa. Es obra del artista murciano Antonio Campillo (Era Alta, 1926).
Me agrada mucho esta fuente por su sencillez y por el efecto de los chorros de agua. Para mí, se ve más bonita si se contempla desde la parte alta teniendo al fondo el monumento a Miguel de Cervantes. En el atardecer, con los maravillosos cielos de Madrid que pintara Velazquez, el efecto es sublime.
Desde otro otros puntos de vista, con la Torre de Madrid o el Edificio de España en su contorno, las ninfas parecen estar fuera de contexto.
Actualmente se está llevando acabo una importante remodelación del Edificio España y se encuentra cubierto de un gran anuncio publicitario que desvirtúa la magia de esta fuente.
Es una fuente sencilla que consta de dos grandes conchas sobre las que hay dos ninfas de bronce arrodilladas, con un cántaro en sus brazos, que vierten el agua. Probablemente, simbolizan el origen de la vida.
El agua del cántaro, al caer sobre la vasija que compone la concha, milagrosamente se multiplica en varios chorros que caen vigorosos sobre el estanque.
En cierto modo, estas ninfas desnudas me recuerdan a las adolescentes de la “Fuente del Turia”, que está en La plaza de la Virgen en Valencia.
El agua es el comienzo. Sin agua no hay vida. Nuestro cuerpo está compuesto mayoritariamente de agua. Por eso, nada mejor que “El nacimiento del agua” para dar comienzo a mi serie de publicaciones denominadas “Curiosidades de Madrid”. In the remodeling of the Plaza de España that took place in 1969, "The fountain of the birth of water" also called "The fountain of the shells" was installed.

It is a simple fountain that consists of two large shells on which there are two kneeling bronze nymphs, with a pitcher in their arms, which pour water. Probably, they symbolize the origin of life.
The water of the pitcher, when falling on the vessel that composes the shell, miraculously multiplies in several jets that fall vigorously on the pond.
In a way, these naked nymphs remind me of the teenagers of the "Fuente del Turia", which is in the Plaza de la Virgen in Valencia.

Water is the beginning. There's no life without water. Our body is composed mostly of water. Therefore, nothing better than "The birth of water" to start my series of publications called "Curiosidades de Madrid". I sincerely hope to count on you and your comments to give impetus to this initiative.
