The Polvorin is a museum in Monclova, Mexico that showcases the history of this city. It is located in the city center on the Calle Ocampo road. The building that houses the museum was built as a fort in 1781 and served as the warehouse of gunpowder of the Spaniards. Post-independence, the building, was abandoned, but in the early 20th Century it was renovated into a school. In the later years, this building also served as a blood hospital, warehouse, sentry box, and headquarters of the Mexican Red Cross. In the late 20th century the building was converted to a museum with the vision of spreading the Mexican history by showcasing the contributions of the people of Monclova in the development of the city. This museum first opened to the public on 12th August 1977 and was renovated again in 2015.
The museum has six rooms that showcase artifacts and exhibits from Mexican history. The paleontology room has some antique showpieces on display that tell a lot about the life of the people in Monclova in the city’s formation days. The second room showcases some of the old household utensils that are more than four thousand years old. The other rooms have exhibits related to textiles, sandals, etc. that are three thousand years old. One of these rooms also has a collection of weapons, guns, archery, etc. that were used during the Mexican wars. Some of the other exhibits are related to fields like sociology, mathematics, art, biology, anthropology, etc. One of the most famous exhibits in this museum is the collection of denominated bills of the Mexican currency since 1913. A temporary room in the museum is used for artistic exhibitions from the local artists.
The Polvorin is located in the city center, it is easily accessible by public transport. It is open for public viewing from Monday to Sunday from 8 am to 7 pm.
