El tren en ruinas/The ruined train

Lamentablemente la época de esplendor del ferrocarril han quedado muy atrás en mi querida Argentina.

Unfortunately the era of splendor of the railroad has been left far behind in my dear Argentina.

Hasta mediados de 1980 el tren tenía un papel preponderante como medio de transporte de pasajeros en mi extenso país. También existía gran movimiento de transporte de cereales y minerales a través de los trenes de carga.

Until the mid-1980s, the train had a preponderant role as a means of transporting passengers in my extensive country. There was also a large movement of grain and mineral transport through freight trains.

Aún recuerdo haber ido a saludar a mi tío a la estación de tren de mi ciudad, cuando el viajaba de la Capital Federal hasta Bariloche en tren. Dicho viaje implica un viaje de más de 1500 kilómetros, de un servicio que si bien no era del todo óptimo funcionaba con regularidad y se podían unir grandes distancias a un costo accesible.

I still remember going to greet my uncle at the train station in my city, when he was traveling from the Federal Capital to Bariloche by train. This trip implies a trip of more than 1500 kilometers, of a service that although it was not entirely optimal, it worked regularly and could connect great distances at an affordable cost.

Con las privatizaciones de varias empresas del Estado comenzó el principio del fin para el servicio ferroviario, que condujo a un gran deterioro del servicio de pasajeros.

With the privatization of several State companies, the beginning of the end for the rail service began, which led to a great deterioration of the passenger service.

Las vías quedaron casi para uso exclusivo del tren de carga.

The tracks were almost for the exclusive use of the freight train.

Hoy el servicio desde Capital Federal hasta Bariloche no existe más. Hay un tramo de vías de 300 kilómetros que van desde Bahía Blanca hasta Carmen de Patagones donde las vías están prácticamente inutilizables por el deplorable estado en que se encuentran.

Today the service from Federal Capital to Bariloche does not exist anymore. There is a 300-kilometer stretch of roads that go from Bahía Blanca to Carmen de Patagones where the tracks are practically unusable due to the deplorable state they are in.

Como consecuencia de este proceso en el que las inversiones para mantener y mejorar la infraestructura muchas de las bellas instalaciones construidas por los ingleses a principios del siglo pasado han quedado en exhibición y muchas otras como las que les comparto en las fotografías en ruina.

As a consequence of this process in which the investments to maintain and improve the infrastructure many of the beautiful facilities built by the English at the beginning of the last century have been on display and many others such as those that I share in the ruined photographs.

El pasear por estos lugares trae un dejo de nostalgia y melancolía por lo que pudimos haber sido como país y no supimos aprovechar. El tren en un fiel ejemplo de ello. Ayuda a recordar aquellas épocas en donde el tren era una opción para poder transportarnos en nuestro extenso país.

Walking through these places brings a touch of nostalgia and melancholy for what we could have been as a country and we could not take advantage. The train in a faithful example of this. It helps to remember those times when the train was an option to transport us in our extensive country.
