I was going to title this blog post: “The Most Expensive Blog I’ve Ever Written.” Chiefly because the 14k “gold” ring I bought specifically to write this serves me no other purpose beyond this article.
Let the battle begin!
Let’s compare unboxings of a 14k ( or as I like to call it a 42% Not Gold ring) from The Other Guys, to a 24 karat gold Menē ring.
The Challenger literally came in a plastic baggie:

How about the actual products? Let’s take a look at what a 42% Not Gold ring looks like. Take note of the diluted color.
Now let’s look at 24 karat gold Menē: (This is the Menē 24k gold NARROW FLAT BAND - BRUSHED)
The real test is to weigh these two rings. I have been waiting 6 months to do this!

But that is not the whole story!

Most important thing to note is the following:
The 42% Not Gold ring contains a measly 2.9 grams of gold. At todays pricing (3\28\18) of $42.83 per gram you have $124.20 worth of gold in the Competitor ring. The cost of the ring is $194.99 so you are paying $70 more than the gold value. Said another way, you are paying a 56.45% premium for a lower quality ring.
The Menē ring is a whopping 10.28 grams of pure 100% gold. At todays pricing you have $440.29 worth of gold in this ring. The ring is selling currently for $532.96. Said another way, you are paying just over a 17% premium for a higher quality ring.
The 42% Not Gold ring is selling for over 3X the Menē premium.
And it doesnt even look cool.
It is important to keep in mind that I found the 42% Not Gold ring after searching for hours for the cheapest experiment ring I could find. This is a non designer ring so even at an over 56.45% premium... most non Menē designer rings are even higher of a premium.
