기온이 높아서인지 몸이 무겁게 느껴집니다.
오늘은 가볍게 읽을 수 있는 이야기책을 소개합니다.
아이들이 자라면서 아내는 영어듣기 책을 구입해서 틈만 나면 틀어놨다.
시사영어사에서 출판한 책들이었는데,.
수년간을 그렇게 반복해서 듣다 보니
아이들은 그걸 다 알아듣고 덕분에 영어에 친숙해졌다.
이사를 다니면서도 그 책들은 집에서 가장 중요한 자리를 차지했는데
나역시 심심하면 아무책이나 꺼내서 읽어보곤 했다.
그 책중에 '사일러스 마녀(?)'가 있었다.
내 눈에 그렇게 보였다.
첫인사(?)를 그렇게 나누고서도 몇년이 흘러
책을 꺼내 들었는데,
아! 마녀가 아니라 '마너'였던 것이다.
이런 나의 교양부족...
줄거리야 다들 알고 있듯이,
'사일러스 마너'라는 어느 직조공의 기구했지만 해피엔딩으로 끝나는
인생이야기 인데..
그런 줄거리야 흔하디 흔한 것인데다가
요즘같이 변화무쌍하고 각박한 세상살이를 뉴스로,
혹은 직접 겪으며 살아가야 하는 우리로서는
그다지 느낌이 오지 않을 수도 있다.
나 역시 이 책을 통해
'고생끝에 낙이 온다'느니, 아니면
'역시 삶의 가치는 사랑과 인내에 있는 것'이야 같은
느낌은 전혀!! 눈꼽만큼도 얻지 못했다.
그 대신에,
주인공의 인생에 드리웠던 어두운 그림자들이
어디에서 연유 했는지,
조연들의 삶을 지배하는 위선과 허상들이
어떻게 만들어지고 공유되고 무의식중에 타인에게 강요되는지를
적나라하게 보여준다는 점에서
작가의 내공을 느낄 수 있었다.
그리 두껍지 않은 책이지만
꼼꼼히 읽어나가려면 중간중간 약간 어지러운 부분들도 있다.
상황설명이나 대화들이 친숙한 형태가 아니기 때문이다.
원서를 읽지 않았으니 번역에 대해 평가하는 것은 부당하다고 생각한다.
시험교재도 아니고,
그저 읽어나가다가 너무 거슬리는 부분은 몇 줄 건너뛰면 그만이다.
★ 수년전 인기를 끌었던 '스펜서존슨'의 '누가 내 치즈를 옮겼을까?'의
아이디어는 여기서 나오지 않았을까? 하는 생각이 드는 부분도 있다.
도입부를 인용하자면,

'안정감이란 확신보다 주로 습관에서 생긴다. 이런 이유로 위험을 경고하듯
상황이 변했는데도, 계속 안정감을 느끼는 경우가 종종 있다..'
★뒤에 이어지는 내용을 읽어보면 아~ 이거구나! 하고 휙 느낌이 온다.
옛날책을 읽다보면 뜻하지 않게 발견 가능한 보물 같은 이야기..
마너의 도둑맞은 돈에 대해 조사하는 과정에서 집 근처에서
부시깃통이 발견되고 그것과 비슷한 것을 가지고 있었다는
어떤 이방인(=행상인)을 의심하게 되는데. 그 과정이 참~ 그렇다.
집단적인 허위심리에 의해 허상이 만들어지는 과정을 보여준다.
당시에는 귀걸이를 한 사람은 사법심판을 받기도 하고,
종종 살인자로 알려져 있었다니^^

' 귀걸이를 하지 않은 행상의 이미지가 분명치 않아서 그 질문을 들은 사람마다
상황에 따라 크든 작든 귀걸이를 한 행상의 모습을 즉시 그려보았다.
그 모습은 곧 생생한 기억이 되었다.'
요즘은 언론에 의해 이런 작업이 이루어진다.
그리고 소설속의 어이없는 인물들처럼
우리 역시 어이없는 착각속에 살아가고 있는지도 모른다.
아마 사람들의 이런 심리를 알고
지배계급은 거짓의식 만들기 작업을 하는 것이고,
아이러니 하게도 그들에게 ‘속이기 주문’을 알려준 사람들은?
바로 위대한 비평적 작가들이다.
그래서 고전을 읽어야 하는 것이다.
아무생각없이 마녀사낭에 동참하지 않기 위해서는..
이야기가 길어지면 지루하니 여기까지
나머지는 독자의 몫이다.
'사일러스 마너'
한번은 꼭 읽어 볼만한 책이라고 생각한다.
인생을 조금 살아보신 중년이건,
발 앞을 살피지 않는 청춘이건..
이 소설의 작가가 [기독교의 본질-포이에르 바흐]를 영어로 번역해서
소개했다는 것도 처음 알았다.
뭐 이제 와서 중요한 것도 아니겠지만..
역시 인생은 짧고,
모르는 것은 많았던 것인가?
