I have fond memories of Kermit. Of Kermit the frog that is, and Miss Piggy, the grumpy old Statler and Waldorf... Kermit seems an appropriate name for a puppet-frog in a hilarious show full of other adorable, funny and outspoken puppets; I believe people my age all remember very well the Muppet Show.

Much later in life I learned that "Kermit" is an actual name, given to actual sons by actual parents... I learned this in one of the many documentaries I've seen about the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East; the 1953 coup d'état in Iran to be precise. I'm going to give a quick and dirty overview here on that nasty piece of modern history, but I encourage you all to research it further yourself. You see, America is beating the war drums once again and seems eager to find an excuse, any excuse to start a military confrontation with Iran; that's why I believe it's important to have a basic understanding about how the military industrial complex and the oil industry have always used lies to get the wars and oil they so badly desire. And in this story there's a pivotal role for president Theodore Roosevelt's grandson, Kermit Roosevelt Jr.
When the leader of the world-empire, formerly the United Kingdom and currently the United States, claims to bring freedom and democracy to far away lands, it's a lie. Always. The opposite is true, as so often is the case in our paradoxical times; we're truly living in times where speaking truth is a revolutionary act. The west doesn't need democracies in the places they want to control for the resources; we need dictators who suppress their own people in exchange for some lucrative deal with The Empire. If you want to produce cheap oil, emancipated workers and a democratically ruled people is the last thing you need, as they'll force upon you extreme measures, like fair wages and environmental protection laws... and a fair price for their oil; better to have a dictator in your back pocket for ease of control.
In the early 1950s Iran was such an uncontrollable democracy;
Mohammad Mosaddegh was the 35th prime minister of Iran, holding office from 1951 until 1953, when his government was overthrown in the 1953 Iranian coup d'état orchestrated by the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and the United Kingdom's MI6.

CIA involvement in 1953 Iranian coup
When I tell people this in passing, they're almost always surprised. Even though this has been a public secret for decades now. But as you can hear in the above linked video, even until today it's explained as a move against the communist threat, instead of purely imperialistic motives of the oil robber barons and their henchmen in the military industrial complex. The democratically elected Mosaddegh wanted to take the oil of his country and use it for his own people, something that could not be allowed by their Anglo-American masters who promptly called into life "Operation Ajax":
The 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état, was the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favour of strengthening the monarchical rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 19 August 1953, orchestrated by the United States (under the name TPAJAX Project or "Operation Ajax") and the United Kingdom (under the name "Operation Boot"), and the first United States covert action to overthrow a foreign government during peacetime.

Kermit Roosevelt Jr. was recruited to the CIA in 1950, and he played a significant role in Operation Ajax as the "ground operational planner." He led what was essentially a propaganda war against president Mosaddegh, eventually resulting in the 1953 revolution that saw the beginning of the rule of the Shah:
Kermit Roosevelt played a highly critical role in Operation Ajax as the ground operational planner, especially in getting the Shah to issue the firmans, or decrees, dismissing Mossadegh. He established networks of anglophiles and Shah sympathizers in Iran that were willing to take part in various aspects of the coup. These tactics aided in dividing and dissolving Mossadegh's political power base within the National Front, the Tudeh, and the Clerics. However, the first attempt at the coup failed, likely because Mossadegh had learned of the impending overthrow. Despite the CIA sending Roosevelt a telegram to flee Iran immediately, he began work on the second coup. He circulated a false account that Mossadegh attempted to seize the throne and bribed Iranian agents. The coup was a success and hence was adapted for use in other third world countries during the Cold War. Eisenhower secretly awarded Roosevelt the National Security Medal in 1954 for his work. In 2014, the National Security Archive released telegrams and accounts of the CIA operation, many of which are revealing as to the part he played in the operation.

This particular story doesn't end here and will see it's effects play out in the Iran–Contra affair in the 1980s under then U.S. president Ronald Reagan, and revolved around arms deals with Iran and the U.S. backed Contras who sought to overthrow the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. Blood and oil. The world history of the 20th century has very much been defined by blood and oil, with the Middle East as it's eternal focal point. So, listen to Bernie Sanders in this video, and remember that we, The West, have waged war with this part of the world, suppressed the people and gave them their dictators, who are really our dictators, for over a century now. I say this not to apportion blame to the people or the current generations, nor to excuse any terrorist retaliation aimed at innocent citizens anywhere in the world, but just to remind ourself of this not too distant history. Remember it as well as you remember Kermit the frog and the other Muppets. Maybe it'll put the current threat of an actual war with Iran in another perspective...
