The onion is a food rich in vitamins and minerals, and is one of the most used vegetables at home, as it is present in most of the dishes I prepare for my family.
White onions are the ones I buy most on a weekly basis, to make stews, omelettes, broths and delicious onion soup. I prefer the small ones to the big ones because I think they have more flavour. I like red onions in salads and when I see them in the supermarket I don't hesitate to buy them, the colour and flavour they bring to salads makes the difference with white onions. The Chives or spring onions, another member of the onion family, I use it in stews, soups and to make cream soups for appetizers. It is much cheaper than onions, has a less intense flavour, and for me it is an excellent substitute when onions are not available or when we are on a tight budget.
I went to three places to do my weekly shopping, I wanted to show you what you can get in each of them as well as the prices of each type of onion, I must say that the three supermarkets are very close to each other and you can find some bargains. The three supermarkets I visited are located in Margarita Island - Venezuela.
I started my tour at the Rattan Hipermarket chain, where I found only large white onions, they were of very good size and there were a lot of them. In this supermarket they sell wholesale from 8 kg upwards, but the difference is only 0.05 cents compared to the retail price. The second place I visited was the Family Market ., a more expensive place than the previous one, they had white and purple onions, here the white and purple onions were of medium size; there was only one container of each type of onion.
My last stop was the Rio supermarket, Río Supermarket, where the white onions were on sale, before they were priced at 1.49$ and now they were at 1.08$, they were of medium size and there were also a lot of them, as for the purple ones they were the big ones and they were at a better price than in the previous supermarket and there in the fridge of this last supermarket I found the spring onion, which is sold with the stalk wrapped in Envoplast plastic to keep it fresh. It is worth noting that in all three places the onions were in perfect condition, very firm to the touch.
Already at home I had smaller onions that I bought from a truck that was standing in one of the streets in the center of the city where I live, the good thing about these merchants who sell in trucks is that they offer us fresh fruits and vegetables at much cheaper prices. I paid $0.28 cents for these onions.
When I buy onions, I can take them with or without skin, but I guarantee that they are firm to the touch, clean and without dark spots. As I have already said, I prefer them to be small in size. As for chives, I check that their leaves and stems are bright green and have no wilted parts.

I find onions delicious and they are one of the main ingredients in my kitchen. Some people don't like the strong taste and smell of onions, so when I prepare dishes for guests that require the onion to be eaten raw, I put the sliced onions in salted water and soak them for half an hour to soften the spicy taste, it's a cooking tip that works for me.
