When I first decided I wanted to play the flute, I wasn’t yet ready to take the plunge and buy one, so I looked online and dug through my old physics notes, and made one!
My old physics notes came in handy for determining pipe length based on the known diameter, as well as for determining approximate hole placement.
Once I had it working and relatively tuned, I got pretty carried away with engraving the flute. The entire body is carved and textured.
As I finished engraving each item, I back-filled the engraving with oil paint. The picture above is the same flute, shown from three different rotated perspectives.
Not long after it was finished, the oil paint was holding up pretty good, so I decided to color the body as well. This didn’t last though. It was not long after I made this that the covid thing was thrust upon us. Early on in that whole situation, I decided to sanitize my flute, which melted and smudged the external paint. After that I doused the flute in alcohol and rubbed off all accessible paint. This remained my only flute for the better part of a year, but inevitably, I did end up buying a few.
These days, I never play the SpiritFlute. It doesn’t play as easily as others, but once I relearn the positioning and get used to it, it’s harder to play all my other flutes!
Currently this flute is hanging out around the thin trunk of a sapling walnut tree (or maybe a tree of heaven…they’re very similar to me). Once the tree has grown enough, I’ll cut it down and make a walking stick with the SpiritFlute as a hand grip :)
