As has been the case for so many of my flutes, this was purchased second-hand. This quena is made of bone. I believe it is the thigh bone from a cow, but I’m not certain of this. The exterior has been buffed to a polished finish and the flute is overall dense, weighty, and far more durable than I expected a bone flute to be.
The Lupaca has a U-Shaped notch. This style usually tends to be easier for me to play, but I couldn’t say why.
While it probably won’t mean much here at Instrument Porn, the folks over at QuenaSabor will know what it means when I say that this quena is my FotM selection for May of 2022.
The bindings are expertly pulled. Not a huge deal and easy enough to do, but still worth noting when things are done right. See that X shape under the binding wrap? That’s the knot that holds it all together. Some people will pull it under just the first 2-3mm of thread - I always recognize when the binding know is centered under the wrap.
Here is a shot of one of the other binding wraps.
These wraps have rotated or were tied without keeping their knots along the same side of the flute. The can often be rotated around if I really cared, but I don’t have the interest presently.
