I don't think I've ever made a review of the movie I'll be writing about today. I mean I am one guy that when I love a movie and watch it often I tend to write down what I love about the movie. And my favorite heist movie is one of my all time favorites, so this should be fun for me writing a review on it.
The Italian Job (1969)
The movie*Italian Job (1969)" is one of a kind classic heist movie that until this day has remained popular. I believe it's been more than five decades since the movie was released. A badass and beautiful storyline movie that leaves no loop untouched. And with the famous Mini Cooper vehicle chase scenes that keeps on keeping me intrigued anytime I see the movie. In Fact it's absolutely no surprise to me as to why the movie has become a favorite to many movie fanatics, myself included.
The movie plot
The plot centers on a group of smart robbers commanded by the actor Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) as they tactically plot on how to steal gold from a bullion armored car in the city of Turin, Italy. The heist was carefully, painstakingly designed and executed flawlessly. If we are allowed to rate heists of such I would classify that as a masterclass, it brings in the suspense and anxiety in full to the viewers. Every minute of the heist was expertly staged, from the onset phases where they were planning the heist to the non stop nail-biting escape, with each player playing an important role in the heist success.
Cast
The cast of the movie is another aspect of this film that I adore. Growing up when I first saw the movie I didn't really know Michael Caine who played Charlie Croker, the gang boss in the movie, i think the role was ideal for. He is calm, composed, and a totally endearing character. He lends comedy and fun to his role and that instantly endears him to the viewers. The remainder of the cast, Noel Coward, Benny Hill and others are equally excellent, as each member of the crew brings to the robbery their own distinct personality and set of abilities.
Why is the heist my favorite
I keep imagining how bold the robbers were. I mean their sheer boldness and of their idea is basically one of the reasons The Italian Job is my favorite heist film. The fact that the plan to steal gold from a bullion armored car in the middle of a busy, bustling metropolis with traffic cameras, traffic jam, and a sewer system is complicated but on the other hand one audacious and bold move. And they went ahead to pull it off, if it was to be a real life situation then it demonstrated their expertise and ingenuity in such a field. And their escape vehicles are a fleet of Mini Coopers. Can I type that again "Mini Coopers".
My best part of the movie
The vehicle pursuit scenes, however, is unarguably my most iconic feature of. The Italian Job. It sounded crazy but ended up a brilliant idea to employ Mini Coopers as their getaway cars. The small size of the cars adding to the suspense and excitement of the moments, the fact it could fit anywhere like the subway. Like the scene where the Mini Coopers drive through the sewers of Turin to the exhilarating chase through the city streets. In Fact the vehicle chase scenes were expertly filmed and choreographed. The Italian Job offers an unrivaled sense of flair and cool in addition to its spectacular robbery and endearing characters.
The characters did so well I couldn't decide whether to support the criminals or the authorities when it comes to the moral implications of the heist genre. However, on the one hand, I was simply supporting the robbers who were attempting to make a huge play. I mean who wouldn't when they made heists to look that cool, they knew their fashions too. Everything about them felt so cool. Although at the later part it felt like they had issues getting away with their loot.
To be honest, The Italian Job is one of my favorite movies of all time, not only my favorite heist movie. It is one exciting action movie with lovable scenes that stick in your mind, as well as its characters' unique sense of cool. Believe me it is impossible not to adore the movie because of the daring heist, their genius robbery scheme, and the classic little Mini Cooper get away vehicle chases. Seriously, If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly suggest you do so because it is surely a timeless masterpiece.
