You throw your fishing rod in the water. Há, bite! Although it is very difficult to fish your prey. What kind of fish are there in Lost Sphear? Oops, you have released Locke, one of your party members, from the bottom of a dirty lake. Humor knows Lost Spear enough, although you scratch yourself with certain choices that have been made, as you can read in this Lost Sphear review.
Lost Sphear is the latest project from the Japanese developer Tokyo RPG Factory, a name you could recognize from I am Setsuna. Another typical old-fashioned Japanese role-playing game that operates from isometric perspective. And leaning on earlier successes like Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger .
And with a story in which emotions predominated, I am Setsuna was quite a hit. Not for nothing in our review labeled as a "topper in handheld mode". Lost Sphear tells the story of Kanata, who has to deal with a world in which everything disappears like snow in the sun. Suddenly a city is no more than a white spot on the map and a mother of a child comes across the same fate.
Serious adventure
A rather serious adventure, in which you, together with some acquaintances, have to put all the effort into solving the problems that the town of Elgarthe and surroundings is getting. But before that happens, Lost Sphear will first introduce you carefully to the main characters at the beginning of the story. Because next to Kanata you have in your party Locke, a young man who is a bit awkward and always thinks about food and chilling. Something that the other two, Lumia and Kanata, would like to tease him with.
Although the story is not of excellent quality, the characters are diverse, you gradually come across new and there is always room for a smile between all drama and hectic. You just have to take into account that the tempo of the game is very slow, with many dialogues that you have to follow, and which are only served in old-fashioned text bars. Something that was also the case with I am Setsuna. It is no longer entirely of this time and that unfortunately also applies to the isometric perspective.
Does not feel great
A camera position that is fine for a cheap downloadable title, but not in a game for 50 euros in stores for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Then you expect an RPG with insane dialogues that are shown in cinematic images. Maybe we got used to too much after the fantastic The Witcher 3, but to be honest: in an adventurous game you want to have the feeling of contributing something great, right? And that does not happen with all the old ingredients that Lost Sphear is rich. And that's a shame.
Nevertheless, it is not only a matter of trouble and gloom about this title, certainly not. Lost Sphear has enough charming ingredients to keep you entertained for many hours, including the fighting system. Via a turn-based system (or for the experts: ATB-system) you regularly come face to face with all kinds of enemies, which differ in format. The world you are in is stuffed with small fantastic creatures that are only too happy to take a bite out of you. And it's nice to beat them and in that way all characters from your party can gradually rise in level.
Addictive
Because you actually notice that you become stronger and it is addictive to collect new gear, apply new spells, and so on. In terms of magic and fighting, Lost Sphear is rather profound and that is why it is, once again, a shame that the possibilities are so little portrayed. Because a fight on life and death, where you have to do your best to fight tactically, will only get better when it is brought cinematic. That does not happen, which does not mean that this gameplay itself is a pleasure.
If you are the type of gamer who has angelic patience and is not afraid to play a lot of characters and follow a lot of lyrics, Lost Sphear is for you. But as soon as you're looking for something with more pace and action, then this is definitely not the RPG to bring home. I am Setsuna fans do not have to fear anything, they know exactly what they bring in their home, with a few fine improvements in gameplay. So there is now more explanation and you are not completely sent into the forest, which is typical for developers from the land of the rising sun.
Keep your head!
Even though a slightly clearer folder would not have been out of place. You now have to continue listening carefully (actually reading) where you have to go and then walk around yourself to discover a location. Actually, it is well explained at a time, but as soon as your attention weakens (because someone says something to you, you look at your phone, or whatever!) You can just miss an important punch. So pay special attention when you play.
That means good headphones in the train, because yes: Lost Sphear is playable on the Switch! A nice extra. Because the Switch does not have as many RPGs. And secretly it is quite a good title, until you see the price of 50 euros. This is the price-quality ratio search.
Conclusion
In summary, Lost Sphear has too little of its own identity and is heavily underplayed for triple A RPGs today. Although you can not compare too much with that. The atmosphere with beautiful music is entirely unique and the dialogues and fights are not that bad. In fact, occasionally you will be pleasantly surprised. Just think carefully whether you want to pay 50 euros for a game with too many old elements. That may be the intention of the studio, that does not mean that we have to settle for an expensive price tag.
Lost Sphear has been available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC since January 23rd .
