Spinal fractures
Stress fractures in one or more of the small bones that are part of the lower back, or lumbar area, have become very common among young and teenage athletes.
A spinal fracture (spinal compression fracture) occurs when one of the bones in the spine fractures or collapses.
These fractures occur most often in the fifth vertebra of the spine or lumbar spine, although they can also occur in the fourth lumbar vertebra. Fractures may occur on one or both sides of the pars bones. In more severe cases, spondylolisthesis may develop. This occurs when a fractured pars bone separates, allowing the injured vertebra to move forward.

Back pain
Back pain is a sign that something's wrong. Sudden onset of pain or chronic mild pain in the back may indicate a fracture in the spine. If you have back pain that lasts for many days, schedule a visit to your doctor so that the cause of your back pain can be determined and treated.
It's also a good idea to watch your posture and height. Make a commitment to see a health professional regularly to measure your height. Fractures in the spine can cause the bones in the spine to collapse and, as a result, there may be loss of height.
Multiple fractures in the spine can also cause postural changes or a Dowager's hump. If you have lost height or have a Dowager hump, you should consult your physician.

Diagnosis
Report any new or unusual back pain to your doctor right away. Early diagnosis can lead to more treatment options. A physical exam, along with an x-ray, can help determine whether or not you have a spinal fracture.
Unfortunately, having a spinal fracture greatly increases your chances of having another one. Over time, multiple fractures can affect the alignment of your spine and cause it to lean forward (Dowager's hump).
This forward curvature can become so pronounced that it will affect your balance and compress your chest cavity, making it difficult to breathe, eat, or sleep properly. Other risk factors include your age, gender and lifestyle.
