Bloody Helmet

Motorizados in my country are infamous for being reckless, aggressive, and hard to kill. I have seen them cause all kinds of accidents and react as if they were the victims. It reminds me of certain politicians and their followers. It gotta be a disease in both cases.

I saw once a mother fucker zig-zag in traffic until he was hit by a car. The driver was an old man who miraculously did not die of a heart attack on the spot. The motorizado was not riding alone. His pregnant wife was on the bike too. So, he got up, helped the woman get up, who also miraculously, did not have an abortion on the spot, and went straight to the poor old man to punch him in the face.

That’s how brave motorizados in my country are. They never respect traffic lights or the most basic commonsensical notions of driving. They pass busses on the right side, on bus stops, just when passengers are getting off the busses, and then they yell at the stupid passengers for almost getting themselves killed.

I have seen them hit a car head-on, fly over it, get up, dust their jeans and get up like nothing had happened.

[End of five minutes]

That’s why when I saw that bastard hit the pavement the second time I smiled. Divine justice? Not at all. It would have to happen more often in order for them to add two plus two. But at least this one time it felt good. This motorizado was actually wearing his helmet. Usually they have them hanging on the handle bar, their elbows, or nesting on their crotch . He was, as all of them always are, in such a hurry he did not bother to check both sides of the road. He trusted his god-given skills to dodge pedestrians, animals, other bikes, soccer balls, and cars in a split second, just like they must do in their video games marathons.

He did avoid the pedestrian, who fell to the floor anyways after flapping her arms like a mad bird after losing her balance. The car was a different story. The motorcycle hit even if slightly, the rear bumper, just enough to make it turn on its own axis and shoot the rider some 20 meters away. I saw him go head first against the sidewalk.

Everything stopped and then as in a bad B movie, the guy got up, looked around, dusted his jeans and did what most people say must not be done: he took off his helmet. It must have felt like a frozen wind stabbed him straight in the brain because shortly after that he fell down to the pavement like an unplugged air dancer.

People say the top of his skull was stuck in his helmet. I did not need see such a thing. I’ve never had the stomach for that. The mere idea of having one less reckless motorizado on the road was enough.
