Lawmakers introduced House Bill 325 not long ago in Montana and it was seeking to allow for the sale of raw and unpasteurized milk in the state.
The bill is still being considered by the Senate, but just this week the Senate Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation Committee held a hearing on the matter and testimony was heard for those both for and against the pending legislation.
There were many who came out in favor of the bill and they don't understand why they cannot be afforded the freedom to decide what they drink or where they get their dairy; even if a risk comes with it.
And there were others who were against the bill, namely health officials and large dairy owners who are pushing for stricter regulations.
At the moment people in the state are allowed to drink their own raw milk if it comes from their own animals, but they are prohibited from selling it to other people.
This new bill if passed would make a change so that small dairies could sell their unpasteurized milk products.
Those who are in favor of seeing the bill pass, say that the opponents are overstating the risks associated with consuming raw milk. And thus far the committee hasn't taken any immediate action on the bill. If they do approve this bill in the Senate then it needs to head to Gov. Steve Bullock in order to be signed.
As more consumers have been looking to get their own raw milk, there seems to have been an uptick in complaints regarding the potential health hazards of consuming the product. Regardless, many people still drink raw milk on a regular basis and claim to have no issue with it.
Shouldn't those who want to consume the milk have the freedom to take the risk if they want to?
