La Gaita significa la forma musical típica del estado Zulia. Nació a orillas del Lago de Maracaibo, producto de la amalgama de las culturas musicales Ibérica, Negra, y la autóctona Zuliana.
En Venezuela se tiene la tradición de anunciar la navidad con las Gaitas Zuliana, entre la mas escuchadas esta "La Grey Zuliana" del monumental de la gaita, Ricardo Aguirre, la cual es del tipo protesta, que aunque fue compuesta en los años sesentas para un acontecimiento puntual en el estado Zulia, esta mas vigente que nunca para la situación que presenta Venezuela en estos momentos y sigue sonando con sintonía apreciable en todo el país. Cuando la gaita se adueña del espectáculo y de los espacios nocturnos de parranda navideña, el segundo himno del Zulia, sigue imponiéndose como tradición de protesta y devoción.
Muchos tararearán "La Grey" pero no conocen su origen; si buscamos en el Diccionario esta palabra "grey" significa "congregación" donde se reúnen los feligreses para formar la feligresía o sea conjunto de parroquianos.
