1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder

During the Rétromobile Week in February 2019, RM Sotheby's will auction this legendary car 1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder, one of only 90 produced during its 3 year production run.

The price is still unknown but yearlier this year, a 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder was sold for $US 4,900,000, an upgraded version of the 550 RS, so we should expect a lower price but not much :-)

History of the Porsche 550

Owned by James Dean (Little Bastard), Ralph Laurens... the Porsche 550 is a legendary car. The model was produced between 1953 and 1956 as the Porsche's first purpose-built race car. This was a huge success with a victory at Le Mans in 1955 and first place overall in 1956 at Targa Florio, open road endurance race in Sicily (Italy). It was nicknamed the Giant-Killer because it defeated all the other race cars of higher class designation.

The Giant Killer has a 1,498 cc DOHC type 547 Flat 4-Cylinder engine with twin Weber 40 DCM carburetors producing 125 hp at 6,500 rpm. This motor was called the Drawer motor because its design was quickly hidden in Dr Ernst Fuhrmann’s desk whenever he walked into his office.
