It's been a long time since I've talked about a favorite car, the classic and iconic Porsche 911. Bring a Trailer, an online auction platform, is offering up until tomorrow this 1983 Porsche 911 SC Safari Coupe with the current bid at $US 111,111. The Safari isn't my favorite version of 911 but with its example, it makes me want to know more about this model.

This example isn't a true Safari but the previous owner modified a Porsche 911 SC in this style. And I find the transformation rather successful...

History of Porsche 911 SC Safari

I think everyone knows the history of the Porsche 911 but sometimes a little reminder can't hurt 😀. All began with the successor to the Porsche 356 in 1959, more powerful, larger and confortable sports car (essentially storage for all set of golf clubs). The prototype 901 was presented during the 1963 Frankfurt Motorshow. Because of (or rather thanks to) Peugeot that claimed the right to three-digit car with zero in the middle, Porsche changed the name to 911.

The Porsche 911 SC was introduced in 1978 with the designation "Super Carrera". 58,914 examples were produced between 1978 and 1983. The Safari version was created the same year (1978) in order to compete on one the toughest rally on this time, the East African Safari. Crazy idea... The Porsche engineers raised the suspension, added lights and a roll cage. And there you go 😀

I love the Martini livery ! Two examples participated to the 1978 Safari Rally with Björn Waldegård & Hans Thorszelius on the first car (they finished second) and Vic Preston Junior & John Lyall on the second (4th). Great result.

This Porsche 911 SC Safari is equipped with 3.0 liter flat-six paired with a five-speed 915 manual transaxle. It can produce 201 hp.

The car was completely restored and modified in Safari style in 2019. Just for info, in 2006, the car was declared by an insurance a total loss 😲. Wahoo quite a transformation... It's now finished in red and white over a black interior. All the interior equipments are really of high quality as you can see :
