This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. Last Sunday I have started my first English class for children from the near by village. I had no idea whether the children would be coming as my gardener had been telling her friends that I would like to have around five children in my class.
We had to organise the seating areas for children; I decided that they should sit on the floor as small kids could fall off from high chairs and table. So, I had to search for some rugs, mats or cushions for children to sit on. I was expecting about three or four children to turn up as these local children were quite shy and English language seemed very difficult for most people. Also, I wondered if these small children would dare to cone to a stranger’s house.
Two children came on their bicycles, other two came with their mothers and grandmother. These parents watched my class for about half an hour to make sure it’s safe to leave the children there. These new students seemed very excited and nervous, they all arrived half an hour early. It took about an hour for the last student to arrive. She said she forgot; she was playing by the river with her friends when her grandfather reminded her of the class at my house.
I was quite surprised that nine children turned up for my class. My gardener told me that most parents who knew about my class told their children to attend the class. Only one young boy was actually ordered by his father to join the class. The rest wanted to come to be with their friends just for fun; only one little boy said English would be useful for his future career.
My intention was to have five children ranging from grade 3 to grade 5 so that they would have already got some English skill and the gap between different levels would be negligible. Now the youngest student was in primary school grade 2, this little boy started to cry when his brother told him that he was too young to come along. So, the parents had to let him cycling along his older brother. I found that all the girls were extremely timid and shy; their voices were very faint and they just kept smiling without speaking a single word to me. It was quite a challenge to ask them to tell me their names.
On the other hand, these boys became like monkeys by the end of the class. Teaching was fun as I had to experiment with teaching techniques and entertain my audience at the same time. They could recite many English words with Thai accent. A few boys could spell and write several easy words but the majority did not know how to write the alphabets nor spell words. So, I realised that I have given myself quite a challenging job. It was very exhausting trying to focus on all the students and to find out about their capability. The class lasted about two hours and my gardener had prepared some fruits for the children. The class seemed like a party for these children. They asked when the next class would be while I started to have a headache! I never realised before that it took a lot of energy and sensitivity to hold a fun and interesting class.
วันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมาเราริเริ่ม สอนพิเศษภาษาอังกฤษให้เด็กนักเรียนที่หมู่บ้าน เราบอกให้คนสวนไปกระจายข่าวให้เพื่อนบ้านรู้ว่า เราจะสอนภาษาอังกฤษที่บ้าน และรับเด็กนักเรียนประมาณ5 คน ระหว่าง ป3 ถึง ป5 เพื่อว่านักเรียนจะมีพื้นฐานมาบ้าง และช่องว่างระหว่างเด็กจะได้มีไม่มากนัก เราจะได้สอนได้ง่ายหน่อย เราส่งข้อความไปทางหมู่บ้านเกือบเดือนหนึ่ง แต่ไม่มีคำตอบยืนยันกลับมาเลย พอถึงวันสอน เด็กค่อยๆมาถึงบ้านทีละสองคน สามคน จนเกินห้าคน สามคนมีผู้ปกครองพามา และนั่งเฝ้าอยู่เกือบชั่วโมง พอเขารู้สึกว่าลูกหลานเขาปลอดภัย เขาก็ลากลับบ้านกัน
การสอนนี้เป็นเหมือนการทดลอง และการหาข้อมูลว่าเด็กในหมู่บ้านที่ห่างไกลเมืองหลวงจะมีการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษขนาดไหน. เราแปลกใจมากที่เด็กที่มาเรียนมาโดยความสมัครใจ ยกเว้นเด็กที่โตที่สุดที่พ่อบังคับให้มาเรียน. เด็กที่มามีตั้งแต่ ป2ถึง ป6 ซึ่งทำให้การสอนลำบากมาก เราพบว่าเด็กส่วนใหญ่สามารถท่องคำศัพท์แบบง่ายๆได้หลายคำ แต่เด็กจะออกเสียงแบบไทย ทำให้ฝรั่งฟังไม่เข้าใจว่าพูดถึงอะไรอยู่ แต่เด็กส่วนใหญ่เขียนหนังสือ และสะกดคำไม่เป็น เขาเล่นท่องจำเอาเป็นคำๆ. เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าการสอนครั้งต่อไปจะมีเด็กนักเรียนกี่คน บางคนอาจจะเบื่อแล้ว แต่บางคนก็ชอบการเรียนแบบเป็นกันเอง เพราะเราไม่มีการบังคับเด็กเลย ทำให้เขาเหมือนมาเล่นกับเพื่อนๆ พอเรียนเสร็จ คนสวนก็จัดผลไม้ที่มีอยู่มาเลี้ยงนักเรียนด้วย ส่วนเราก็มึนเพราะ รู้ปัญหาของการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษของเด็กแล้ว ก็ต้องมาหาทางแก้กันต่อไป
I have already asked some friends in Bangkok to donate some English story books and Thai books suitable for young children. In the long run, I would like to have a big tv screen for using other multi media. But I have to see how this teaching project will turn out in two months’ time. I think I have to teach them to read and write Thai language properly too!
