I don’t listen to music every day. In fact, most days now I don’t. But some days I do, and today was one of those days - le apetu wastelo!
Today’s soundtrack was Heavy Horses, by Jethro Tull. My good friend loaned this album to me about two years ago, when I started playing flute. Of course I already knew Jethro Tull, but admittedly I was more of a greatest hits level enthusiast. Diving into this album I would equate to the first day a Pink Floyd fan ventures away fro Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall to experience Animals…it’s an experience of sheer joy, hearing these new sounds coming from old familiar voices, and Heavy Horses packs a massive dose of this exact experience. Melodies that come across almost medieval remind me of Blind Guardian, renaissance fairs and days of yore. Solid bass riffs, some seriously metal drum lines and guitar solos, and of course killer flute solos all bounce off of each other in such fashion that you can’t help but be pulled to a different time in your mind.
My friend is at home. He hasn’t been to work in two months, his absence is owed to a stroke. The album was a gift at the time, but now I may leave this job before he returns, and the album has come to mean so much more to me. I’ve stayed in touch with him while he’s been out, but not as much as I’d like to…things have just been so busy. No matter, this album will always take me back to the hours we spent talking about music, life, religion and politics - all the things you’re not supposed to talk about 🤣 we didn’t always agree on everything, but we never fell short of respecting one another and enjoying engaging in deep conversations.
Anyway, I hope he’s back on his feet soon, and I hope you find as much depth, beauty and inspiration in this album as I have.
I try to only post these daily soundtracks when I come across one of those albums I can easily listen to on repeat, and this is absolutely one such album.
Thanks for checking out my daily soundtrack today!
Thanks for checking out some more of my work! As always, I hope you enjoyed witnessing as much as I enjoyed creating!
