We often pass this vintage garage on our way through Somersham and always thought it looked quite quaint so we stopped and took a walk around the place to get a few photographs for you.
Looking at the architecture. I'm guessing this is a pretty old building and probably pre-dates to right back to before the beginnings of motor vehicles. The house and other buildings look to me to be have been built in or around about the 1830's?
The showroom was probably a stable. This is of course all supposition but makes some kind of sense as many old stables were converted into makeshift prototype garages and the blacksmiths were one of the first trades to transition into motor car building and repairs.
Those petrol pumps look pretty ancient and people who are into automotive memorabilia find them highly collectible. Or so we are led to believe by the myriad of TV shows flogging old junk to idiots.
This garage has a small showroom and it had two vintage cars on show. One was a Vanden Plas and the other an MG.
I know virtually nothing about cars except that they get you from A to B most of the time. That's about the extent of my interest and knowledge. I must have missed that day at school where they were handing out enthusiasm for cars!?
The MG. I've never seen one like this and the shop was shut so couldn't get any details except for what is on the display board at the bottom of the photo. Pretty pricey for an old jalopy if you ask me. In fact I've never actually seen this place open? Can you see my old jalopy in the reflection below? Pure fluke I might add. :)
The showroom had a nice clock and weather vane on the roof which set the whole building off nicely.
It was a good excuse to get out and stretch our legs as @tattoodjay recommends we do at least once a week. Not that I need a good excuse for a wander. :)
And just in case you needed some spare parts it even had a small spare parts shop. Wow how things have changed. This shop would fit into any Halfords (car spares franchise) about a 100 times.
I hope you enjoyed this little tour of a vintage garage. Au revoir.
