Hasta ese día, la verdad salió a la luz junto con unos tragos de tequila. # Era su cumpleaños número veintiuno y ella había tomado la decisión de celebrarlo con sus amigos más cercanos, incluyéndome. Su plan más personal: hacer de Cupido. Aurora tenía esta idea retorcida de quererme emparejar con su mejor amigo. Decía que su cumpleaños era el momento perfecto y que lo iba a adorar. Si tan solo supiera lo equivocada que estaba. Mi confusión había empezado desde que besé a mi vecina mientras jugábamos a la casita, y siguió en la prepa cuando la chica menos social de mi clase me robó un beso en la sala de informática. Sin embargo, nada parecido volvió suceder y traté de convencerme de lo que sentí en esas dos ocasiones fue solo producto de mi imaginación y mis hormonas. Pero, ahora todo era diferente. Habíamos sido compañeras de cuarto desde hace dos años y medio, y nunca me planteé que me gustara. No fue hasta que empezó a desvestirse frente a mí, que algo en mi cuerpo despertó. Cuando hacía eso, evitaba mirarla directamente, pero me era sumamente difícil cuando ella me preguntaba cómo se veía. Como si no supiera que lo hermosa que era. En las noches, me descubría a mí misma mirándola mientras dormía. Era el único momento en el que podía hacerlo sin que ella me descubriese. Entonces podía grabarme en la mente su hermoso cabello azabache, sus labios ligeramente rosados y su piel clara, con lunares que adornaban su espalda. Toda su belleza me invitaba a robarle un beso mientras ella yacía en los brazos de Morfeo, pero me contenía porque sabía que no era correcto. Ella había decidido que el mejor lugar para celebrar su cumpleaños era en el pub más concurrido de la ciudad. Todos nuestros amigos irían y eso significaba que Ryan, su mejor amigo, estaría allí. Mientras íbamos en su auto, no podía dejar de pensar en una excusa para que Aurora desistiera con su idea de emparejarme con su amigo. No me interesaba en lo absoluto conocerlo, menos cuando a quien quería besar era a otra persona. —No sabes lo emocionada que estoy de que conozcas a Ryan. Te va a encantar. —Lo dudaba. —Claro. —No sabía que otra cosa decir. Ella siguió hablando de lo encantador que era su amigo, que era el mejor prospecto para mí y que lo iba a adorar. No sabía por qué insistía tanto en decirme las cualidades de Ryan. Nada de lo que pudiera decir iba a cambiar el hecho de que estaba enamorada de ella en secreto. Llegamos al pub y ahí estaban todos esperando a la protagonista de la noche. La ronda de abrazos y felicitaciones me pareció que duró una eternidad, hasta que llegó el momento del reencuentro de Aurora y Ryan. Ambos gritaron de emoción al verse y aunque me pareció tierno, por un momento me sentí desplazada. Luego, como si mis pensamientos fueran muy evidentes, Aurora volteó a verme y tomó mi mano, lo que hizo que mi corazón se acelerara estúpidamente. —Ryan, ella es Amalia. No sabes las ganas que tenía de que se conocieran. —Él era guapo; tenía unos ojos cristalinos como el agua, y no su físico era bastante proporcionado. Sin embargo, no me provocaba absolutamente nada. Sonreí por pura cortesía. —Aurora me habló mucho de ti —dijo él con una sonrisa. —Es un gusto conocerte. —Me pareció que de mi boca salía la mentira más grande mi vida. —¡Qué hermoso es tener a mis dos personas favoritas en el mismo lugar! —No sabía si reírme por la ironía o alegrarme por ella—. Vamos por unos chupitos. No se cumplen veintiún años todos los días. Aurora nos arrastró hasta el reservado donde estaban todos nuestros amigos y fue entonces que la fiesta comenzó. Había risas por doquier, dos bandejas de nachos con queso, y mucho licor. Aurora no se separaba de Ryan, lo que me parecía molesto, pero al mismo tiempo no dejaba de mirarme lo cual consideraba extraño. Supuse que seguía hablándole de mí y de cómo él y yo podíamos hacer una linda pareja, puaj. Intenté no enfocarme en ellos, tenía que hacer de cuenta que mis sentimientos no existían. Esta noche se trataba de Aurora y no de mí, así que hice lo más normal, beber con mis amigos hasta perder la conciencia, o al menos eso esperaba. Vi que Aurora también empezó a beber sin moderación y por un segundo me preocupé. Por otro lado, no podía decir ni hacer nada al respecto. Ryan sugirió jugar al beer pong, y ella saltó con emoción ante la idea. Me gustaba ese juego porque era buena en ello, pero Aurora era fatal y sabía en menos de lo que cantaba un gallo estaría totalmente borracha. El grupo armó la mesa con los vasos y pronto empezó el juego. Ella era la protagonista de la noche, por lo que decidió participar de primera. Las rondas fueron de grupos de dos, y aunque veía a todo el mundo disfrutando y riendo, por dentro, yo tenía ganas de desaparecer cada vez que Ryan se me acercaba a preguntarme algo random. Para quitármelo de encima me pegué como una garrapata a una de nuestras amigas. De reojo vi que Aurora me miraba con fastidio y suspiré. Sus ojos ya se veían rojos por el alcohol, mientras que yo intentaba ser moderada, cosa en la que estaba fallando porque ya me sentía mareada. —Iré al baño un momento —dije a mi amiga. —¿Quieres que vaya contigo? —preguntó con amabilidad. —No, no hace falta. Divierte. Me dirigí a los baños, y por suerte, no había cola. Entré y de inmediato sentí el olor a desinfectante. Mi miré en el espejo y mi reflejo me decía que estaba a unos cuantos chupitos de perder la cabeza. A través del espejo vi un cubículo vacío y me metí para poder liberar mi vejiga de tanto alcohol. Intentaba no pensar en nada, cuando un golpe en la puerta me hizo saltar. —¿Ya vas a salir? —Era su voz. —Sí. Dame un momento. —Me acomodé los pantalones y salí. Aurora estaba sentada en la encimera del lavabo y yo fui a lavarme las manos. Sentía su mirada atravesándome. —¿Te pasa algo? —No. —Ryan dice que no le das ni la hora. —Vaya. Lo siento. Espero que no la esté pasando mal. —Me escurrí las manos y tomé un pedazo de papel para secarlas. —¿Por qué estás siendo sarcástica? Pensé que te gustaría. El mareo se me estaba subiendo, y verla ahí sentada con esa cara de enojo me estaba provocando más cosas de las que debería. —No sé por qué creíste eso. ¿Acaso eres ciega? —¿Qué estaba diciendo? —¿A qué te refieres? —Obviamente, estaba confundida. —Olvídalo. Tiré la bola de papel al cesto y me dirigí a la puerta. De pronto, una corriente eléctrica subió por mi espalda. Ella sujetó mi brazo y yo sentí que no iba a aguantar más. —¿Te gusta alguien más? —Es tu cumpleaños. Deberías enfocarte en ti, no en mí. —Tú eres mi mejor amiga. —Esas palabras se sintieron como cuchillos en mi espalda. —Lo sé. —Respiré profundo y me di la vuelta para encararla—. Volvamos a la fiesta. —Dime quién te gusta. —No tiene caso seguir hablando del tema, Aurora. —¿Por qué? —Porque es lo mejor. —¿Para quién? —Para las dos. Y en ese momento no sé si ella entendió lo que trataba de decir, pero sus ojos me miraron con una profundidad que antes no había visto. No quería malinterpretarlo. Ella estaba ebria, y yo estaba siendo una terrible amiga. Lo mejor que podía hacer era huir. Pero justo cuando quise hacerlo, cuando había decidido cortar la conversación y escabullirme como una cobarde, la mano de Aurora apretó mi brazo con fuerza, atrayéndome a ella y por consiguiente, robarme el beso que tantas noches había anhelado robarle yo a ella.

It was her twenty-first birthday and she had decided to celebrate it with her closest friends, including me. Her most personal plan: to play Cupid. Aurora had this twisted idea of wanting to set me up with her best friend. She said her birthday was the perfect time and that she was going to adore him. If only she knew how wrong she was. My confusion had started since I kissed my neighbor while we were playing house, and continued in high school when the least social girl in my class stole a kiss from me in the computer lab. However, nothing like that ever happened again and I tried to convince myself that what I felt on those two occasions was just a figment of my imagination and my hormones. But, now everything was different. We had been roommates for two and a half years, and I never even considered liking him. It wasn't until she started undressing in front of me that something in my body woke up. When she did that, I avoided looking directly at her, but I found it extremely difficult when she asked me how she looked. As if I didn't know how beautiful she was. At night, I would catch myself looking at her in my sleep. It was the only time I could do it without her discovering me. Then I could etch in my mind her beautiful jet hair, her slightly pink lips and her fair skin, with polka dots adorning her back. All her beauty invited me to steal a kiss from her as she lay in the arms of Morpheus, but I held back because I knew it wasn't right. She had decided that the best place to celebrate her birthday was at the busiest pub in town. All of our friends would be going and that meant Ryan, her best friend, would be there. As we drove in her car, I couldn't stop thinking of an excuse for Aurora to give up on her idea of setting me up with her friend. I wasn't interested in meeting him at all, especially when the person I wanted to kiss was someone else. "*You don't know how excited I am for you to meet Ryan. You're going to love him*." I doubted it. "*Sure,*" I didn't know what else to say. She went on and on about what a lovely friend he was, that he was the best prospect for me and that I was going to adore him. I didn't know why she was so insistent on telling me about Ryan's qualities. Nothing I could say was going to change the fact that I was secretly in love with her. We arrived at the pub and there they all were waiting for the star of the evening. The round of hugs and congratulations seemed to take forever, until it was time for Aurora and Ryan's reunion. They both squealed with excitement at the sight of each other and although I thought it was tender, for a moment I felt displaced. Then, as if my thoughts were too obvious, Aurora turned to look at me and took my hand, which made my heart race stupidly. -Ryan, this is Amalia. You don't know how much I was looking forward to them meeting. -He was handsome; he had crystal clear eyes like water, and his physique was quite proportionate. However, he didn't provoke me at all. I smiled out of pure politeness. "*Aurora told me a lot about you*,” he said with a smile. "*It's nice to meet you*". It seemed to me that the biggest lie of my life was coming out of my mouth. "*It's so nice to have my two favorite people in the same place!*" I didn't know whether to laugh at the irony or be happy for her. "*Let's go get some shots. You don't turn twenty-one every day.*" Aurora dragged us into the booth where all our friends were and that's when the party started. There was laughter everywhere, two trays of nacho cheese, and lots of liquor. Aurora wouldn't leave Ryan's side, which I found annoying, but at the same time she kept looking at me which I thought was strange. I assumed she kept talking to him about me and how he and I could make a cute couple, yuck. I tried not to focus on them, I had to pretend my feelings didn't exist. Tonight it was about Aurora and not me, so I did the normal thing, drink with my friends until I lost consciousness, or at least I hoped I did. I saw that Aurora also started drinking without moderation and for a second I was worried. On the other hand, I couldn't say or do anything about it. Ryan suggested playing beer pong, and she jumped with excitement at the idea. I liked that game because I was good at it, but Aurora was terrible and I knew in less than a blink of an eye she would be totally drunk. The group set up the table with the glasses and soon the game began. She was the protagonist of the night, so she decided to participate first. The rounds were in groups of two, and although I could see everyone enjoying themselves and laughing, inside, I felt like disappearing every time Ryan came up to me to ask me something random. To get him off my back I clung like a tick to one of our friends. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Aurora giving me an annoyed look and I sighed. Her eyes already looked red from the alcohol, while I was trying to be moderate, which I was failing at because I was already feeling dizzy. "*I'm going to the bathroom for a moment*,” I said to my friend. "*Do you want me to go with you?*" She asked kindly. "*No, no need. Have fun.*" I headed for the restrooms, and luckily, there was no line. I walked in and immediately smelled disinfectant. I looked in the mirror and my reflection told me I was a few shots away from losing my mind. Through the mirror I saw an empty cubicle and went inside so I could release my bladder from so much alcohol. I was trying not to think about anything, when a knock on the door made me jump. "*Are you coming out?*" It was her voice. "*Yes. Give me a moment.*" I adjusted my pants and went out. Aurora was sitting on the sink counter and I went to wash my hands. I felt her gaze piercing me. "*Something wrong with you?*" "*No.*" "*Ryan says you don't even give him the time of day.*" "*Wow. I'm sorry. I hope he's not having a bad time.*" I wrung my hands and grabbed a piece of paper to dry them. "*Why are you being sarcastic? I thought you'd like him.*" The dizziness was creeping up on me, and seeing her sitting there with that angry look on her face was making me more excited than I should be. "*I don't know why you thought that. Are you blind?*" What was I saying? "*What do you mean?*" Obviously, she was confused. "*Forget it.*" I threw the paper ball into the basket and headed for the door. Suddenly, an electric current ran up my back. She grabbed my arm and I felt I couldn't take it anymore. "*Do you like someone else?*" "*It's your birthday. You should focus on you, not me.*" "*You're my best friend.*" Those words felt like knives in my back. "*I know.*" I took a deep breath and turned around to face her. "*Let's go back to the party.*" "*Tell me who you like.*" "*There's no point in talking about it anymore, Aurora.*" "*Why?*" "*Because it's for the best.*" "For whom?*" "*For the both of us.*" And at that moment I don't know if she understood what I was trying to say, but her eyes looked at me with a depth I hadn't seen before. I didn't want to misunderstand. She was drunk, and I was being a terrible friend. The best thing I could do was run away.
